Notes from Adventures reread
Now we’re getting into interesting territory in terms of stuff I wrote down while on my pokemon special marathon.
I recently reread the entire series from RGB to SV’s current chapter. It was kind of interesting for generating ideas and also just seeing how different the old chapters are compared to the new ones now… I guess. Spoilers for like, all of pokemon adventures/special.
Think I might’ve had some of these notes during my RGBYGSC reread marathon I never posted anywhere
Mostly on observation stuff
People point out that Red has no parents in Pokespe compared to the games but like, a lot of the protags have no parents. Green's parents? Nope, just his grandpa and Daisy. Yellow has an uncle, but sometimes that's not even canon and he's just some guy she hangs out with. Silver's mom is gone, it's just Giovanni. Crystal just has her mom, same with Gold. Sapphire apparently has a mother but she's never on screen. Ruby has parents. It's a plot point that Emerald's parents are dead. The DPP trio have parent(s). We never hear about White's parents, Blake's are dead. X's parents if they're alive suck because they let him be a shut in for years. Y's dad is never mentioned.
So it's like a 50/50 chance they have no parents or one parent is out of the picture.
Actually, a large amount of characters in Pokespe either never have their families mentioned or they're dead or living by themselves like this is a normal thing for the world
everything in pokespe ties back to viridian forest if mew's considered and even before that everything in pokespe minus 4 arcs can be tied back to one guy deciding that he would do anything to save his pokemon from an incident even if it was the dumbest plan of all fluffing time
Pokespe old people suck so much that Oak who sent two children off with the magical plot device that literally causes evil to be created and also sent his grandkid to be trained
by Chuck who beat him up on panel and used another kid’s PTSD trigger to punish them is somehow morally the best out of
them because Agatha goes for full scale murder omnicide and old man [redacted] and [redacted], you know, causing trauma not only for the protagonist’s friend group but also every single person in the stadium and as a whole having ripple effects that might as well affected the entirety of Pokespe as a whole to the point that he’s basically responsible for like 50% of events of the series. (RGB because of team rocket being created, Yellow because of Rocket, GSC because you know, FRLG because of rocket, Emerald as Well, the events of ORAS because of FRLG, XY because of ORAS events, he comes back in HGSS so also DPP.) the only things I can say he wasn’t responsible for were RS, BW and BW2, SM, and SWSH but if I do a reread there might be some kind of connection.
The daycare couple also being a part of that friend group and they were also almost killed because of Neo team rocket, like can you imagine what its like knowing multiple people in the friend group were severely fluffed up but only after the fact.
literally 50% of pokespe or everything from RBG to ORAS to DPP can be blamed on this one guy because of the way team rocket was made plot divergent from the OG
Silver is literally the canonical lynchpin of the pokemon universe
if you think hard about it if all of those things didn't happen backstory wise then pokespe might've been like the gamesverse because the world is more brutal as a result of the random action of brutality that was deliberately picked by one man deciding to not go through the process of grief
I would go back in time and beat this old man up
And then I would do it again
7 arcs of things at fault directly or indirectly, 8 if you squint, out of 15.
Conclusion: I need that old man dead.
2 lapras that died from natural causes
Vs
Six children
Idk the math works out in my brain: this idiot
Oh god, they really did make Silver forgive his abuser in HGSS and his mentor and father team up with him, how did I forget that, did I just block it out?
They should have left him dead, Kusaka never should’ve written him in, should’ve just had a
duplicate or something, he did the same thing for ORAS. Characters just end up being written for plot reasons sometimes.
Green has never had a moment where he’s had a breakdown unlike others in his friend group,
which kind of surprises me, because he’s the guy who has had a lot of moments where he’s
nearly gotten killed even more so than the others because Agatha wanted him DEAD. He’s really got his crap together,
he even caught a ghost type pokemon for XY in spite of Agatha doing her generational hater crap. I wish Pokespe
could have more time so we could see more interactions between trainers and pokemon, later arcs don't get as much especially when there's a larger human cast.
Like my favorite early chapter in RGB has to be that one where Green and Red had their parties switch and when they got back Green was like "why are they all cuddly now."
Mt. Silver is such a funny place contrast wise in different mediums
Games: It is a harsh place where only the strongest can survive, Red is here at the peak
Anime; Inexplicably there is an entire town here only for contests
Pokespe: hot springs :)
You ever think about how in pokespe red has trouble distinguishing his left and right hand sometimes because of being frozen
My favorite part about the lack of people reading pokespe means that I can say anything and you, the reader, will have to believe it
Yeah, Red takes his shirt off at one point to fight Giovanni yakuza style on top of a burning helicopter during the FRLG arc (mewtwo and deoxys are fighting as well)
…adding Pokespe characters to the anime? I feel like the best one to add in couldn’t be Green because Gary already exists unless you make him have a sibling. You could have Yellow be a character of the day in Viridian forest like that samurai guy was, she’s pretty much a prototype character for “people with powers” in the pokemon world. She’d never show up again though.
The anime itself is extremely formulaic though where you can put any episode on and guaranteed team rocket shows up and blasts off. Imagine if a girl like Blue was in it with her early thief personality and gadgets as a recurring figure to just troll Ash. It would be quite entertaining. A lot of gen 1 and 2 material is a bit weird thinking about how squeaky the franchise is now, huh. Dengeki Pikachu would never be made today.
Pokespe being in that time period of freedom when the only content was literally 2 games and a few sentences of dialogue meant they could take whatever creative liberties they wanted like making half of the kanto gym leaders evil
very funny how sabrina's been unable to shake off that reputation since the anime also did that creepy crap with the dolls
It's pretty interesting how supplemental material went absolutely ham in between the G1 to G2 period because of the Delay.
Pokespe released in 1997 but the clefairy manga release date isn't even on wikipedia
Like the Red volumes/Tankobon were wrapping up in 1998 based on author messages and clearly kusaka or MATO got to play a spaceworld demo based on the designs of some NPCs that show up in the volume 3 arc in the crowd, but this doesn't even account that the magazine dates were even earlier. Maybe even the anime got inspired by pokespe based on this post I had on cohost a long time ago noting that Shigeru wore a cloak around the same timeframe when Green showed up in the Yellow Arc with a cloak (funnily enough, Shigeru/Gary's was brown, and Green's was originally the color blue, but when he returns in XY its brown.)
People were free roaming to do whatever they wanted when they were making stuff because the lore wasn't established as much AKA Early Installment Weirdness (TVTropes reference WTF?!)
Euuugh, why did I type that.
OG Cohost Post on the Cloak Thing (March 23, 2024): Was reading through the Pokespe XY arc and saw Green with his cape again. I ended up being reminded of that time in the Pokeani where Gary wore his cloak. I wonder if it was just total coincidence between mediums where they both decided that the gen 1 rival would look cool wearing this (the yellow arc started in 1998 and the 1st episode that Gary showed up wearing this was 1999). I think he looked very cool when he showed up in XY, so it worked on me.
Reading through dialogue for Falkner and falkner is here like "my dad is in heaven watching me" and meanwhile in Pokespe
he's alive, a DILF and potentially a homewrecker with Chuck. Falkner Pokespe is so funny, why is he throwing pokeballs with
shards of skarmory's wings like a boomerang, that could literally impale someone. Ball tossing is so crazy regardless in pokespe.
Kahili golf clubs. Crystal kicking. Emerald’s gun. Yellow fishing rod. Bugsy Net. Gold's literal pool cue shots. Moon bow and arrow. I think Lt. Surge literally just shot
his pokeballs out of a cannon and blew himself up once. Where did Giovanni find that guy.
Going through the notes of the lounge…
I sure do mention Pokémon special/Pokemon Adventures a lot
I guess it makes me annoying a bit...
Yeah, it’s a series near and dear to me
Along with the rest of Pokémon
There’s not really many other Pokémon manga I can talk about though because they’re all usually one shots or not translated fully or in copyright hell like Pokewake/How I became a card or you know, any other particular manga’s story has been complete or canned for years.
As much as I’d enjoy talking about other Pokémon manga it’s not like Pokespe where I can read it and find something that can become a plot point for a later arc because there is no “later arc” for any manga. Pokespe is the only one outside of Pocket Monsters (the Clefairy one) and Magical Pokémon Journey to go through multiple generations past gen 4 and have like… an active plot instead of being a gag manga or be episodic. And it’s not like the main artists of any of those mangas have been doing anything new pokemon wise, best you get is maybe fanart.
I think if there was to be an artist who would make a new pokemon manga, I’d want it to be Hitoshi Ariga not because of his pokemon artwork, but because of his work on the Megaman series with Megamix and gigamix because he managed to turn a bunch of gameboy stories into like this Asimov story of complexity about beings who had to do their best while under the three laws. Archie Megaman also kind of did that but it got like unceremoniously killed by crossover money and the writer’s insistence on writing every game adaption as is when it was clear he was doing a lot better whenever he was making up his own thing like did we really need a super rockman adventure adaption and then a 3 adaption, isn’t that kinda superfluous…
Pokemon?
Pokemon.
(I was at an irl library and it’s kinda funny seeing the vizkids labeled Zelda manga be in the teen section but Pokespe is in the kid section because like, true, but the same thing happened in another library I was in where kingdom hearts was also in the teen section and like… sure?
Less fun thing: due to my height people still think I’m a high schooler so they asked if I needed help with finding assigned reading.)
Pokémon try adventure did that too I think… (for like gen 4 to 5) but who else even knows that pokemon try adventure exists? Like I saw it on a wiki page once but aside from a cursory glance at the wiki page there’s not much else to work with or talk about. (Oh, is this the same artist that drew phantom thief pokemon 7 and the battle stories battle network manga? The art style looks familiar…)
(Note: Okay so yeah, it is the same artist and it turns out they’ve been actually doing pokemon related content since Gen 1 with the manga called Get Pokemon. Wow, that one must be more obscure because I’ve never even heard of that one until now. This is the artist who made that one battle network image of Raito! Wow. Really small world moment for me because I’ve seen that art before.)
Okay so I read through try adventure arceus is a whole menace for no reason why is the pokegod always pissed off that’s consistent with every appearance
The BW campaign is also bizzare because the author clearly wasn’t given any info on the games and just the pokemon so the final arc is the characters exploring a “new continent” and fighting a guy named “the black and white king”. A bit on the nose, eh?
Other stuff then?
So yeah, not much to talk about unless I start bringing up fan content, and it’s harder for me to compare fan content to officially licensed product(s) because the fan content can do whatever it wants and they are held up to entirely different standards (the word MANDATE appears and briefly vanishes) . Plus the power of hindsight and working with preexisting knowledge versus starting off working with just gen 1.
Or it has the problem of the author/website vanishing off the internet entirely, like what happened with nearly every Pokémon comic on smackjeeves since the website itself was wiped off the internet outside of the comic creators who moved to comic fury or the internet archive’s backup.
Hard to think that was 4 years ago… I feel like that site’s gonna be like in the back of my mind for quite a long time.
So I don’t think I’m gonna be like “today I’m reading Mokepon, or Mystery Dungeon Victory Fire, or the one with the Eevee who was an experiment but I forgot the name (Shinka?), or petty nuzlocke, or Road to Glory, or Crystal Double Nuzlocke, or rare candy syndrome, or Rebellion, or Nightmare, or it’s a hard life, or yokonoma Fire red nuzlocke, or tale of a cubone” or any other fan comic I had read once that buried in my memory and pops up like a sleeper agent.
Honestly the Pokémon comics were secondary, the real sleeper agent were the Kirby comics on smackjeeves, I remember I’d used to hog the family desktop to read through all of Kirby adventure squad and dream adventure…
Ah, memories.
Catch me out here talking about stuff like gloomverse or Zelda Demon road and simultaneously something like the after subtract and two evil scientists (miss you Ryan) and Mario’s day out and The Dee Army and L’s empire and Kirby vs the squeaks and Mario vs Sonic vs Megaman and Bass Legends and To Defeat them All and I know a lot of the sprite comics i read probably would not hold up but you know, sprite comics are cool.
Anyone remember sprite comic hotels? Those were pretty fun. I remember
I wanted to make a sprite comic once, that’s what that one sprite battle mockup
image was in reference to because I still have the drawings of Kirby characters I made years ago. I might incorporate sprite stuff into the site just for fun depending on how I’m feeling.
I like to spin pokemon adventures arcs in my brain sometimes when evaluating my notes like rotisserie chickens in terms of like how generally nutty the pokemon adventures/special world
is to me.
Thought Dump 2!
RGBY and FRLG:
do i think red being a sad little orphan boy is a bit much even though I think he is an orphan
idk
he's a good boy because he's raised in a good place because pallet town is like one of the places in kanto that is like. Good. Because there’s no pollution or something. Ultimately it doesn’t actively matter in the grand scheme of things once you get past kanto arcs and it’s more or less a thing of “early Kusaka could do whatever don’t think about it too hard”
it does make for like a good factor in motivation but like i don't think it's a big thing he actively thinks about in his life because he seems pretty happy
fascinatingly in adventures red the rom hack he does have a mother and she dies which i think is meant to tie into the later frlg arc if the game ever gets there in it's like PSDK remake but that game is all over the place in terms of being like a full 100% experience I mean like all of the stuff for pokemon adventures is there but buried under a lot of stuff I find uh. Interesting in a microscopic way of people can read different things of the same material and come away with way different conclusions as to what would fit in or not.
red's a little country boy from pallet town and like green was sent to train under chuck who basically made him less of his game counterpart and blue was actively trained as a supersoldier
the fact he can keep up with them is a testament to his nature as the fighter but its kinda funny how RGB is like a "frog goes out of his tiny pond and discovers the big world" and he seems like a levelheaded kind normal guy out of all the other guys right until he opens his mouth and says “hey did i tell you guys about my brother, the literal space alien clone of me”
as teenagers in frlg it's like okay, their worldview has now gotten a bit more complex because the people they want to help are now against them and like, is their worth only defined by the thing that oak gave them or would they be heroes regardless and help people even if they don't like them and like red doesn’t have a good reason, he doesn’t have a family, he defined himself as the guy carrying oak’s dream of filling out the pokedex and like what is he without it
the answer is of course they'd be heroes like even without the pokedex red still would've gotten trounced by
green and mew and then gone on his journey and maybe like with blue oak would've given him a pokedex later on
Ultimately though red’s role is the fighter because like literally in pallet town that’s the only thing people knew him for and if he never fought mew and discovered he wasn’t the best he probably would’ve just stayed in pallet town
He still can’t tell his right and left apart though and i think Lorelei’s little freezing scheme gave him possible long term hand damage. Go to a doctor, I don’t think the magic healing springs are working out for you.
By the way, the reason they are healing is a Japanese thing in GSC where the source of fresh water is said to be from Mt. Silver in the item description. That’s not in the English version of GSC.
Lemonade is also interesting because it’s flavored milk in Japan for Gen 1 but then it just turned into lemonade or soda or like… you ever think about how lemonade in other areas will get you a sprite instead.
You go to XY and like Green’s character has developed so much from the way he was in other stuff where he was a bit of a stick in the mud and you know he was also the serious one but the way he mentors the kids like he did yellow he’s really learned and grown and developed in a more organic way thanks to going on his adventures and being around Red because he really mentions Red a lot like the whole thing with Scyther and Pinsir being rivals and he was like “wow… just like me and Red” and then he has terrible aim and misses throwing the pokeball and X also misses too.
I can’t get over how Agatha slinking away at the end of the yellow arc to never be seen again drives me crazy
She could still be out there doing evil plans or maybe she's dead but knowing her she would just come back as a ghost
Yellow’s got an interesting thing in terms of morality where more or less in the first arc when dealing with rocket she literally threatened them with a huge boat crushing them and letting them sink into the ocean because she offers ultimatums
She doesn’t like fighting but if you get in the way of peace she will become a weapon
And how in terms of like Green being like “hey your whole kindness ultimatum thing isn’t really always going to work out because what are you going to do when an enemy says no” that does ultimately happen with Lance, and the sheer fact is that Lance became fearful of this child because in the world of extreme violence that pokemon special is Yellow decided to stop being kind to destroy him and literally nearly controlled a god and instead used that power to be kind again. She’s kind of terrifying in that she is also like weirdly normal like Red personality wise but literally like if (big if) anything went different then we could’ve dealt with a second person like Lance.
Funny thing about Lance too, the final reason Yellow goes absolutely ballistic against him outside of trying to kill everyone is when his dragonite is trying to hide its injuries from him and Lance not being able to see that outside of his tunnel vision of making a pokemon only utopia and how that is his downfall because Yellow wants a world for both humans and pokemon and like if Lance can’t even tell his own pokemon are being harmed then it’s the last straw
I feel like Lance’s character ultimately just like does not hold up from the way he was during Yellow to like GSC where it’s like man had an ephiphany so bad he was like “my bad let me never do that again” and like what is the Yellow elite four anymore because they have the johto elite four like hired by the association so like did Lance just go severely rogue and clearly when characters change so much between arcs from the way they were during gen 1 and 2 it’s because like it’s not like the author knew they’d be reoccurring characters or also like. The existence of remakes in general. I have such an interesting take on remakes due to my TCRF research where it’s like the only reason FRLG exists was because gamefreak wasn’t confident enough in selling ruby and sapphire because people were thinking Pokemania was over. The technical reason was also because like, they couldn’t figure out a way to transfer the pokemon over from gen 1 and 2 and the solution was making colosseum, XD, and FRLG as like a band aid to the solution. “Gotta save em all” was used in commercials during the time, it was clear they were kinda selling nostalgia from the start. (Note: hey, save that for the nostalgia rant, this is about pokemon manga)
I wish Yellow or Lance met N like in between BW so they could go “hey that guy is kind of like the other guy”
In terms of remake arcs for LGPE has it been 10 years yet in the timeline of adventures because it’s kind of scattered all over and also the LGPE arc probably isn’t happening because pretty much pokemon adventures said “mainlines only” and the best we can get is like a mini reference. See, this is why I am begging for an anthology. Hit me up with Pokémon Adventures Side Stories like Sonic Universe used to be for Archie Sonic
Would another Viridian child be born or like does the forest not have enough spirit to give because like the only person still actively using the powers is Yellow, Lance literally hasn’t used his powers of healing since Yellow and presumably he can still do like the hyper beam directional thing like in HGSS
Like what if the power gets split and it's both the LGPE kids and like Yellow goes on an arc of her own to like train these kids and then idk since Petrel had to meet Yellow to steal her looks maybe this would've been the time since LGPE does feature the HGSS rocket admins as battles but idk I haven't played LGPE or watched much footage of it but I like Trace. He doesn’t deserve slander he’s literally in the baby’s first Pokémon game and like he just wanted to be your nice neighbor leave him alone!!
I kinda wish LGPE didn’t have the Go controls because otherwise I’d probably buy it. Thankfully there is the GBA recreation.
GSC and HGSS:
Gold is so funny because like he lives in a house full of pokemon to the point it gives him the power to raise superpower babies, the entire town was like “sup gold” he basically spends majority of GSC being like ngl I’m doing this for my own gain and I don’t have a major motivation to save the world or anything, I’m here for fun, so see you guys I’m gonna go sacrifice myself to Silver who literally made it his life mission to get rid of the masked man, find his father who was Giovanni, and literally Silver just wants everything that Gold has in terms of a happy life and Gold just wants acknowledgement when most people around him are going “oh god it’s that guy again”. I feel like Gold also had that big pond complex Red had but instead of using it as growth Gold internalized it as "oh am I not good enough? am i now." The contrast between cover characters is wild because like Red's the straight laced average hero mold, Yellow would be the shoujo hero of another genre and is out of place for pokemon, and gold is borderline anti hero in that he's anti authority, he actively screws around with the police investigation by giving false info, and he could've literally dragged silver back but decided "this guy is interesting I kinda vibe with him".
Like Silver has big main character energy from the start, a non pokedex AU basically has that guy flagged as the main protagonist still and then here comes bumble boy from tree town who loves gambling and basically decides to die for him. I feel like the official artbook having gold call down super rising thunder on the masked man and the same page having Giovanni lift silver from the flames of his own creation in team rocket is insane because like Silver doesn’t want to rely on others as much as he needs to and like I'm definitely overthinking it but yeah, those are important people to silver's life on the same page. Silver massive guilt complex over rocket does happen because like Sird goes “hehehe I bet Giovanni will be super happy look we even gave silver an evil outfit”. Literally I think about how Giovanni lifted Silver out of the flames and was like “you kept your handkerchief” because Giovanni was dying and the only thing on his mind wasn’t recreating his evil empire it was finding his son who literally was abducted by a person in an act of senseless violence using a pokemon as a tool and that toddler turned into a whole grown teenager now but in his mind he’s still the child like. Pokemon adventures takes a lot of liberties with characters but I really wish the masked man was talked about way more often because he is truly a vile man.
Giovanni goes “nah I would’ve made rocket regardless of you” which alleviates the guilt thing but like if not for Silver being kidnapped pokemon adventures wouldn’t have been that different from the games verse if Pryce decided to go to grief counseling and maybe his friends actually intervened instead of like, making a song for him. I think the sheer fact the man didn’t need to drag an entire region into his crimes, he didn’t need to kidnap multiple children, the fact is this man became terrible and did deliberate choices and the HGSS arc says “he can go back to his gym and Silver’s sneasel gives back the badge and none of his crimes are answered for” HE BRAINWASHED MULTIPLE CHILDREN AND TWO OF THEM HAVE BEEN IN JAIL FOR YEARS BECAUSE OF HIS ACTIONS and the other two didn’t even realize they were basically kidnapped because he made them think they went willingly
Blue and Silver are the siblings of all time to me but I wish there was literally anything interesting going on with Blue’s parents because they exist only to be kidnapped and then Blue more or less gets turned into a statue too because like the last thing she says to them on screen is “when I was gone crazy stuff happened and now I’m a soldier of justice” and like her parents 100% accept that. Just like a precure whenever they need to transform in front of a crowd and reveal their identities. Like what is her home life even like on the Sevii islands when half the people she knew probably were in that hospital breaking in to try to kill her because they were wanted on the island to be captured. Like I can’t imagine her going to a poke mart and like people are looking at her and thinking “my house was bombed because of you and your friends” even though like they did stop the giant helicopter from landing and nearly killing a lot of people. I certainly can’t think a child who was kidnapped and came back as a teenager who has had far more life experience would certainly have anything to relate and it would be incredibly awkward to go “hi mom, hi dad, if I start screaming in the middle of the night just ignore it”. Like at what point does attempting to live in her normal household start to feel like another monitored prison like the one the mask of ice had.
Go back to gold.
Actually what is up with gold's bizzare energy powers to literally like give babies the power to fight gods.
he can just do that and i know I said that but he really can just do that.
No like everyone else has some in universe explanation like Red just level grinded, Green literally got trained by a gym leader, Blue and Silver were forced to train as soldiers, Yellow has magic, and Gold has… no explanation. Like the whole climax is “what are MY special powers” and then the letter is like “you’re good at raising babies even before they hatch!” How did you find that out?? And the actual explanation is “he lived with a house full of pokemon so he can just do that I guess I’m a pokemon scientist not a human scientist dawg idk man tf .”
skills kind of get absurdly weird because like you get people who clearly have a normal thing they're good at by training for it and then there's also like literal superpowers And I really have been thinking about that comment by Yamamoto during DPPT where he was like we decided to not give any of the new characters any supernatural powers and it’s kind of like they’ve leaned more towards hard science ever since with pharmacy girl and stuff like flyer gal and literal super spy boy who has no powers aside from being a super cop who was like trained by super cops.
RSE and ORAS: i feel like a lot of the balance between interpersonal human drama in ruby sapphire and also big giant kaiju legendary super battle is kind of all over the place for me and the thing that breaks the immersion for me is when they go into the hyperbolic time chamber on mirage island and like not the time or place for that in terms of everything and you’re telling me that orphan emerald was walking through literal flood and drought areas without a single pokemon and he was perfectly fine
Ultimately though pokemon adventures is crazy because the ORAS arc retroactively makes literally everything in regards to the trauma between ruby and sapphire and Norman’s punishment by the pokemon association zinnia’s fault for unleashing the salamance because the association killed Aster and like okay, the government is also a largely corrupted force because they don’t vet check anyone in terms of what’s going on between the villains in the RGBY arc and GSC where literally they had a massive terrorist attack with Neo rocket on the gym leader stadium where nearly everyone in the stadium was injured or came back harmed and like does the person who caused this get any punishment. No.
I wish I could understand more of the relationship between Ruby and Sapphire and potential parallels but honestly I feel like everything stacking up in the arc really was like the definition of like how chaotic and frantic everything was in universe and how these two traumatized children still wanted to find each other and how Ruby keeps relapsing in self destructive behavior and ultimately leading to more harm than good because of the way both characters changed for the other and still almost nearly didn’t recognize each other because of it. In another timeline ORAS would’ve been focused on the slightly different timeline where Ruby more or less did not have Celebi as his 6th pokemon to fix everything and we would’ve had like bizzare parallel universe nonsense with Zinnia being like “damn, that’s crazy, you wanna drop the meteorite on those guys too? Yiiikes.” The center of RS is conflicting values and that's all over with the gym leaders and ruby and sapphire and norman and ruby and courtney and ruby and uhhh..... ruby with himself i guess.
What is the central thing of emerald. Guy who plays competitive decides “wait this sucks nvm I like pokemon more than their stats.”
That is not the central thing of emerald. Honestly the battle frontier being so lighthearted in comparison to like how FRLG ended with the statues (which is like a movie reference or toku or something or ultraman idk i saw it in a tweet once upon a time) and RS nearly ended with a lot of people dead Emerald is almost like jarringly out of place as an arc but I’m glad because I don’t think I could imagine like another arc full of sadness but ultimately i think 3 for 3 completely downwards tone stories in this like seemingly fanservice finale bubble emerald kind of has as an arc would weaken it. But you know, emerald the arc reminds me of like precure all stars new stage where a lot of emphasis is put onto cure echo and most people end up going “booo, we wanna see the other characters” and in terms of other characters we did get the pokedex holder super attacks and the only character that did not appear was Wally. I like Emerald but I can also admit that it’s kind of nuts they advertised Wally as the third pokedex guy in promo art before emerald and changed him during the volume rereleases to being a temporary holder. Emerald is like one of the most divisive characters because Yamamoto designed him so that way literally everyone would be like "what is HE wearing". I feel like the gang could’ve done with a 4th guy in the dynamic because as is it’s mostly just Ruby and Sapphire and Emerald is also there sometimes. I feel like some groups are better than others in terms of like being able to see them just like hanging out and doing group activities. I can’t really imagine that for the RSE cast or the extended cast for the seniors like I think if gold and ruby hung out the crust of the earth would be torn asunder as the two inevitably try to beat each other up (more of Ruby vs Gold and Gold probably ticked him off.) like i can see the kanto and johto guys hanging out because like there is an overlap between like age and location in terms of the link between silver and blue and green and crystal and gold and red and yellow is there too but there’s not anyone for yellow to fully bounce off of or parallel to.
If Lyra existed in HGSS instead of just being an outfit swap then yellow would have someone to be with but I guess a character named like Heart or Soul being like a brand new pokedex holder with a new skill would be more convoluted to introduce in the midst of a remake arc instead of just like. Giving crystal new clothes. That was already precedent in adventures by having Blue put on Leaf’s clothes.
Why do I call the girl Blue and the boy Green? I’m more used to fan translations than the OG English localizations at this point and it’s too late for me as indicated by the site where I mostly go “rival” or “unused girl” whenever I refer to gen 1 iterations of the kanto trio.
DPP and HGSS: man I wish the PLA arc was real. I wish Sird was handled in any kind of interesting way instead of her getting away offscreen. Literally what is her deal because for starters how does she know about Yellow’s powers unless the galactic spy network was that good and how did she escape Lorelei’s ice magic powers. Literally the only thing we got about her in terms of inspiration of the three beasts is that she is a vampire apparently but is she also a vampire in adventures proper?
I don’t think Sird is just some regular team galactic member. I think she’s like some kind of immortal ancient evil being stirring up chaos for fun who will never be elaborated on. Like there’s gonna be a conspiracy board in my mind for adventures being like “you see during the collapse of the ancient empire Sird was also there drinking a martini. Sird caused the avalanche that killed Pryce’s lapras. Sird’s the one who helped AZ build the ultimate weapon.” Sird is actually immortal and like an envoy of a great evil. If the concept of fate exists then she is like an active manipulator and making everyone dance on puppet strings for her amusement.
is Celebi literally like the new equivalent of the Viridian forest in being like the nature being that goes around fixing things when they get out of hand because this also happened in RS
*Me lighting a blunt and taking a huge whiff*
Mythicals are clearly their own thing that live and exist separate and only show up in dire moments to solve man made issues like how Celebi broke the orbs and how Mew stopped the huge helicopter but like…
*I exhale smoke but it turns out the blunt was a lollipop*
What if Sird if like an anti Mythical made by ancient nefarious forces (Giratina?) to cause havoc
Like what if she is like an anti pokemon who is always causing human misery
She’s clearly not just galactic, she always has contingency plans, everyone else in galactic commander wise was just quirked up
The daycare couple mentions Gold but like there’s a huge time gap in between pokemon special because they decided to make berlitz a child during ORAS and Spepedia and the creators also keep going “their ages are a secret~” so like who knows how old gold is now or what he’s up to. I feel like having a long running timeline is starting to be an issue unless Pokémon adventures decides to go with comic time and just have everyone stop aging if there’s ever any remake arcs happening because like in ORAS Red and Blue (girl) show up wearing their FRLG fits and they’re supposed to be in their 20s now. I can’t imagine them still being like in their 40s having to keep saving the world from crises and stuff.
What happened to arceus that led to him fleeing to heaven. Like that would’ve been answered with Volo but honestly I don’t want to imagine like any of the DPP cast being sent to the past, it would make me sad unless it’s like a bootstrap paradox where the family is founded because of her.
BW: i feel like white becoming one of my favorite girl dexholders in the reread was very unexpected because like she wasn’t a battle girl like her usual depictions and like she took to plasma philosophy and ultimately didn’t reject it because yeah, pokemon should be able to explore other options rather than being pigeonholed into what humans define their roles as but like i don’t remember her team at all outside of the serpereior and vullaby and ultimately her role is pretty much over unless they decide to randomly have her show up in the blueberry academy if SV covers the DLC
in terms of other title girl characters though they certainly are all over the place like pre FRLG Blue clearly stopped her whole trickster scheming ways and Yellow kind of just went from like somewhat battle dense abrasive sleepy crybaby cowboy fellow to "stoooop fighting (meme)" and it's more or less because like there's not enough time for them to organically be that way development wise because Yellow completely shifted past GSC once the hat reveal was shown and something like Blue going from the way she was in FRLG where she decided to stop shouldering her burdens onto just herself to like "I am selling my stuff to the super cops" is a direction that makes sense kind of but like at that point why not just make her a super spy too
this is because I am thinking about blake and how he is literally a child soldier supercop and blue was a child soldier and she should know about that and potentially do something about that because that is like the most missed oppurtunity in pokemon special aside from giovanni assassinating pryce
Others:
I liked XY when comparing it to the game plot and I haven't really gotten far with the anime adaption of it yet but I feel like if I read it properly in a marathon I might not like it as much in terms of like existing in a narrative sense because it was extremely fast paced
I wish I had more interesting things to say about SWSH and Sumo but I like how Schilly goes to Soudo like I know you did a lot of hard working things for me but I never really praised you or anything or let you know when you were going too far with stuff so I’m sorry too which is like, such a breath of fresh air compared to how a lot of other stuff is built off miscommunication in adventures.
I really wish SuMo didn’t have the timeskip with the ultra beast invasion and it actually like had a volume to itself like how SWSH had a volume about handling the dynamax pokemon because it’s a large missed oppurtunity to actually show off the more dangerous ultra beasts individually instead of as a group but oh well
they’re implying that scarlet is like a mercenary hitman orphan girl
What in the world is going to happen to violet once he realizes that his butler phone isn’t his actual butler and that he’s basically just don quixote but as a rich boy
I'm thinking of doing something absurdly stupid for whenever my next marathon is
where I read them backwards going from SWSH to RGB
Unless SV finishes by then which it probably won't
unless...
it's kinda really funny that SV is the only arc that seems to be paying attention to Violet the game because even masters said scarlet is canon and like horizons is now moving onto the DLC arc in kitakami so the question is what are both adaptions going to do with the beloved Ogerpon
I hope Ogerpon uses her ivy cudgel to bludgeon something
adventures has been able to get away with a lot of stuff in the past aside from like the child abuse stuff getting changed for the viz releases but like ruby sapphire arc had multiple characters die and ruby saw his father being burned alive and like that has still not changed in sensibility for later arcs aside from leaving villains alive but breaking their spines so what i'm saying is
do you think they're gonna show the corpse during the SV arc
what is wrong with me.
I kinda wonder what the future of Pokémon adventures would be because the duo can’t keep running it forever. Passed onto a new writer? Ends at a final game adaption? Some kind of big grand finale? (Probably not.)
As long as there are new games, there will be new adaptions. Nothing for the switch era like LGPE or PLA because well, they would’ve been good, but there was no time or place for them. Another author or artist might’ve been a good pick, but that is mostly because I’m really thinking about manga anthologies and Pokémon.
We have more animated short thingies than manga nowadays which I guess makes sense but I can’t really compare an animated thing to a manga
Unless of course, they make like a best of pokemon special like Viz did all those years ago but with animated scenes
What would my top animated scenes be that would be the best ones though
RGB: Sliph Co triple attack, red and green’s team swap, Red vs Giovanni, the league finals of Oak vs Blue and Red vs Green
Yellow: Red vs the elite 4, Yellow and Green’s training arc, Blue and Bill vs Bruno’s Hitmonlee, Yellow vs Lance for the last time
GSC: Gold vs Silver with his Tyranitar, Lake of Rage Gyarados, Crystal vs Suicune, Gym leaders on magnet train, Super rising thunder
RS: Ruby vs his dad, Wally climbing the tower, Sapphire’s confession
FRLG: The Escape chapter of Blue and Silver, Giovanni taking Silver out of the fire, Sird’s statue thing
Emerald: Emerald saying he likes pokemon, the phantom kyogre battle
DPP: Berlitz reading the letter, the morning reunion, the gang letting go of their pokedexes, let’s go gambling!
HGSS: Gold’s Togebo evolving, Crystal trying to catch Arceus
BW: The train scene where black tosses his Briviary to white as she goes on the battle subway, Bianca shredding the guitar, cheren’s dream and Musha’s return
BW2: The reunion hug scene
ORAS: Ruby and Sapphire looking at the stars in their space suits
XY: Green’s training arc with the kids, Trevor vs Lysandere
SWSH: Tate thanking Soudo for everything he’s done, smug Pikachu and Hop
SM: Lillie showing her mom the pendant or Zygarde’s rage against Necrozma
Even though I just read through them, I can’t really think of anything for some of the later arcs.
