I'm just gonna reupload the entire thing in one go. Cancelled halloween story from last year featuring Rene as a vampire, Beet as a zombie, and Bon as an innkeeper.

untitled vampire story 01, the river and the lost

in which a body is not found, and the closest thing to the protagonist is lost.

Birds chirp, leaves rustle, and a body washes up through the river.

If someone were to check it, the first thing they’d notice is their unkempt white hair and dressing (all torn up.) If they had looked further and flipped it over, they’d see the giant slash mark across, covered in blood. That their face was left unmarked, so they could clearly see someone barely past their adolescence, eyes closed as if they were asleep.

But no one had came, so the body continued to float onwards. As the sun turned towards the moon in the absence of the second moon, the clothes were soaked, the chirps turned to hoots, and the body had caught on a rock and settled, undisturbed.

Eventually, it got up and left.

If one were to ask M’ari Tia anything, it would likely be “how’s the catch today?”

But this were not the ports he was used to, nor the rowdiness of pirates and ease of drinking. Instead, from the very start he set foot in the forest, he had felt the wind stop blowing as if to say “you don’t belong here.” As he continued to the settled portion, that feeling of paranoia only continued as the guards on the marked pathways follows him with their eyes.

A bark from below him, and he was bumped into.

“Aw. Thanks. But I’ll be alright.” Reassured by his pup, he continued passing through, pushing both branches and bushes out of the way.

Incidentally, his children, adventurous even when grown up as adults, had come across a disgruntled magic user who had proceeded to afflict them with something. A something that couldn’t be cured. The rumormill and word of mouth were picked up while he was fishing, which doubled as him fishing for information.

The best place to be healed was within a place known as the shroud, where the people lived with nature and messengers of their godlike beings.

“Of course, that’s if you’re even approved to be healed.” The other fisherman said in between his meal, “And on top of that, these people are hostile to all outsiders. Step on a branch the wrong way, and you could easily be wasted.”

But he would not be undeterred by something like that. Those were his children, the ones he had watched grow up, the ones he had found floating in the ocean while he used to be a pirate. Nothing would get to him, and he would get to Gridania and do whatever he had to do.

Of course, easier said than done.

“Maybe I should have brought a map…”

chapter 2: eccentricities

The longer I write this the more I realized I should’ve called it “untitled Halloween story” considering later off-center depictions for all the characters minus the Valentin family.

Of course, good things must come to an end, and while M’ari couldn’t describe being lost as a good thing, the clouds gathering like lost karakul and breaking down could be described as worse.

By the time he reached a sort of clearing, the rain had stopped, and he had somehow gotten even further lost. Traveling through the desert region and in the swamps was one thing, but now the area he was in was simply more forest than the last, and there were no signs in sight.

The only thing he did see, at the very center of the heart of the forest, was a giant tree.

So, in reverence, and believing this to be a sign, he got onto his knees in prayer.

Great tree, please let me find a way out of here.

Dead silence.

Maybe I need to say this out loud?

So, he prayed again.

“Um, excuse me, oh great tree… please cure my children.”

“Hello? Hello? Am I doing this wrong?”

He felt a gentle tug upon him, and assumed that maybe it just took a long reception, but when his dog began to bark he at last turned around—

Only to come face to face with a stranger in… a maid outfit. A Lalafell, to be precise. She stood there placidly, and blinked a few times as he blinked in response.

“Ah.”

“…ah?” He replied.

She merely pointed in the left direction, where there was a giant slug, and more importantly, a man trapped within the slug.

“Do you…want me to help?”

She nodded. Perplexed by her non panic, M’ari gathered his courage to fight the giant slug, only for his sword to easily slice through the slug resulting in it making even smaller slugs.

“Ah….” The maid had the nerve to look disappointed.

“Okay then, you try getting him out.” She smiled at this taunt, and pulled out an axe.

The end result was a hundred or thousand dead slugs in the water, a completely soaked party, and a woman far too satisfied with her carnage.

The man trapped within hadn’t even awoken when freed around a huge number of slugs ago, so instead of a traditional wake up, the maid merely slapped him in the face. He wore a mask over his face and hood, but he could still clearly be heard snoring. Looking over his more noted body, M’ari noted that his ears were pointier, and he held a more slender frame than a Hyur. So, an elezen.

“Snnn… five more minutes?”

She pulled out a knife and staked it in the ground next to him, lopping off a few strands of his hair. The white strands floated peacefully in the water.

“Good morning, milady! I see the slug did not deter you from doing your duty, and oh, you’ve made a little friend, too! Have you introduced yourself?”

The feeling of entrenchment was deep. It was like witnessing two people wrapped within their own song and dance, a performance for an audience of only themselves. In other words… rich people.

“Well, I’d hate to be so rude to our guest! I am but an anonymous villager of these woods, and this is my fellow countrywoman, Beet!” The white haired elezen bowed, and so did the lalafell.

“Hmmm?” Beet pointed towards M’ari.

“Eh, you seem absolutely soaked. Did you come all the way here in the rain?”

“Uhh. Uhm.” M’ari started. The scenario was. Hard to parse. “Yes?”

There’s no way this counted as conversation.

“Why, that won’t do at all! If you’re looking for a place you can actually stay in, you’re in the wrong direction entirely! There’s nothing here but a useless tree, after all.”

“Mmmhmm.”

“Civilization is that a-wayyy!” And with that, the man flourished and scurried, climbing up the tree and hopping up a cliff. The maid gave a tiny curtesy and skipped to follow her companion.

“… are all the people of the forest like that…?”

For chapter 3: I wrote this down on a piece of paper and then completely forgot to post it because I was working on finals. Also in an entirely different person compared to earlier chapters…

Under the shade of a great tree, you rose from death’s slumber… and promptly went back to sleep. This would be fine, minus your… friend….hire… companion? Who took great offense to your sleeping habits and proceeded to rouse you with various slaps on the cheek. You didn’t have the heart to tell her that it was more irritating than hurting, and it would more likely hurt her if she applied any more force. Her hand might come off, and that would make things very awkward for all involved. Nonetheless, napping after helping someone after napping again was not something she considered, especially since the house was literally right there. Even if it wasn’t truly your house, and you were merely staying in there to make it so that someone lived there. Aside from yourself and the occasional void sent, she was the only thing that would be considered “living” there, even if she was a largely coherent corpse.

“Aaa.” Minus the fact that she spoke absolutely no words. Your attempts to remind her that she could speak were met with blank stares and total disinterest. I’m a zombie, and you’re some sort of weird creature that’s only from horror novels. Why bother with conversation when actions speak louder than words, and most action taken towards you would probably be murder? Though. It’s likely she could do the exact same thing you if she ever bothered. No, for a zombie, she was largely more concerned with tending to the house and your well being. Which again, maybe necromancy was in the list of powers you got after almost dying… doesn’t make any sense, but better than trying to question what you were. A vampire? The term felt like the right one, but it was more theoretical than anything based in reality.

A strange zombie, and an even stranger vampire, even if you felt you barely fit the description. You didn’t bite people nor did you feel any craving for blood. Mostly you just wanted to sleep. And eat more often.

“You know, we have an excess of vegetables in the manor again.” She nodded.

“We might have to go out and sell them.” She raised her eyebrows. “Who knows.”

“Maybe we’ll meet our new friends in the city…!”

Notes:

The next chapter will finally focus on M’ari getting to Gridania and the plot will actually happen. When does this take place on the timeline for XIV proper?
I dunno, probably post ARR considering Haukke Manor Hard. I’ll get to it eventually.

Cancellation Announcement, Remnants

Vampire story is so not being worked on anymore, the muse well has abandoned me. To make up for it I’m posting out the outline and snippets from what I did manage to finish

It wasn’t flowing to me as well as I thought it would and I didn’t care for my imaginary build up so I’m just posting the semi full outline from the daydream and other stuff that I finished.

Really, I should’ve titled it as untitled Halloween story considering how everyone was slightly more weird from their usual depictions but the longer i get away from Halloween the less sense it is to have that title

Written out scenes/dialogue

A series of unfortunate contrivances otherwise known as “M’ari gets trolled.” This would’ve been the next chapter.

Meeting Bon, the innkeeper

Bon: My friend.

M’ari: The tree?

Bon: They have ears, you know.

M’ari narration: Okay, so the entire city state is full of weirdos, maybe my children being turned into magic dolls is right up the alley, someone has to have something I can work with.

They made me do fetch quests

Rene: No, I’m entirely used to rich people and their bizarre acts of hedonism, so I preferably like staying humble.

Can you stop switching dialect every single two sentences?!

Nay.

Is this entire fic just M’ari getting trolled? Maybe….

M’ari asking in Gridania why the weird guy who lives in the mansion is like that only to get these answers:

Rich people are like that

Rich people are not like that

Ew, an outsider.

Hotel fight scene AKA Beet and Rene are no longer friends

Beet: I thought you would’ve figured it out! I’m out here like. Hello? Free meal!

Rene: You are not a free meal to me. You’re, you’re… you’re insufferable!

Beet: Says the shitty vampire!

Rene: Don’t come to my house anymore. Don’t wash my laundry! Leave my vegetable garden alone.

Why do you know this guy?

You’re that creepy doll guy!

You’re a shitty vampire! You haven’t even bit anyone!

Why are you even here?

Shrugs. My caravan exploded.

Rene, why do you know this guy?

Rene: That’s the guy who tried to fuse me with the voidsent in the first place.

Pepper: You’ve gotta be kidding me. I know that guy, (witch) he’s a huge ass!

Outline 1

Rene is a vampire
Mari and kids (Sage, Pepper) are magic users, considered as witch and familiar (somehow different from XIV lore or just in a way that doesn’t sound XIV like)
Lily is a resident and has gone missing, Samga (from squadrons, did I ever fully explain Rene’s squadron) expects she’s gone near the haunted manor (Haukke)
Mari goes to investigate but so does his magic rival (New OC?) (I think that became the doll maker)
The twins are decommissioned so Mari can take the stage, they got turned into dolls
Are there various others who they’ll have to deal with? (I have no clue what this is referencing)
Beet works at manor and pretends to be an undead, Rene is displeased to find this out because Bon goes (she looks like a regular human to me)
Bon is considered an outlier for his many clones (I think this is a casual reveal as to what he actually is since i never got to it on the ask blog but that’s what I was hinting to) because he acts like Ingo from the Pokemon Special manga where he’s always referring to himself as the innkeeper in third person
You re disturbing the guests!
It is an innkeepers job to…
Lily went to manor but is undisturbed by supernatural because she is a little science lover. Oh, she’d love to make a Frankenstein if possible
Pen abruptly breaks in implying he heard about this or just happened to be in Gridania in his knight armor already chasing an unrelated lead but then decides “if there’s villainy afoot, I’LL handle it like a good knight!” Oh, Pen. You exist in a world where chivalry will leave you disillusioned due to the sultansworn.
Rene just wants everyone to leave
Bon and siblings run a bunch of inns around the country which has no overbearing on the major plot minus the fact I wanted to make all the characters feel more Halloween/Supernatural themed for the holidays which is why Rene was a vampire, Beet was a zombie, M’ari was a “witch/herbalist”, and Lily rocked that one all saint’s wake scientist costume. Basically, I wanted to make it somewhat accessible even without full 14 knowledge.
Implications the reason no one detected Rene as a voidsent is because he’s a lazy ass and kind of like. A regular guy in Gridinia. He doesn’t even suck blood.
Pen is still a guy who pretends to be a knight
When does this even take place? After Haukke hard with the implications Rene ate the boss (the one that still wipes people in ARR) marking him as a weird voidsent and probably before bloody banquet
Wait shit this is just Abel and Ein but Halloween flavored (I didn’t post about these guys either lol, I really need to clean up my Notion notes for 14)
Your sister misses you dearly. Come home. (Referencing a very quickly scrapped plot featuring a bounty hunter because I was feeling like there were way too many subplots happening)
The reasoning for the twins (sage and pepper) being turned into dolls Was because pepper’s familial inferiority complex which I need to get into rose up and he was like “maybe if I’m turned into a magic doll I won’t feel so inadequate” and Sage followed him to the witch’s lair and the witch immediately went “bleh heh heh, I’m the witch, and I’m gonna do this so you’ll learn a lesson about family and shit” only for the intended plot to quickly careen off the edge once M’ari met this incredibly rich and eccentric elezen

Outline 2(?)

Back when it was October of 2023, I had a Daily prompt list I wrote out that I made for Vampire Story

Day 1: Setup for Gridania, vampire washes up at the river
Kan-E is not there. (In reference to the fact that Rene’s original gridanian backstory featured him specifically being rescued by Kan-e-senna, which I felt was a bit too much and broke my rule of “part timers and major MSQ characters shouldn’t directly interact unless necessary” which ended up being Rene waking up by himself. The fact that he was almost dead is now in reference to the scrapped bounty hunter plot)
The eccentric: Lily chapter before she goes missing

M’ari meets Rene with an umbrella in the forest?
M’ari is told about the voidsent, basically told to leave
M’ari ends up at the manor since he got kicked out, Rene is annoyed by him
since Lily is also there, also undead beet comes in; Lily reads muses books and calls Rene a shitty vampire since he doesn’t suck blood just emotions and still burns in the sun but he can eat garlic
You’re some stupidly specific ass shitty vampire!
He doesn’t even hunger for aether since he literally ate a hugeass voidsent
Pen barges in
Inn Chapter (Intro to Bon)

Reinvestigating the Manor
Beet’s a normal person at the Inn, Rene hates this fact
Don’t come to my house anymore. Don’t do my laundry, don’t tend to my vegetables.
Their bizarre friendship is dissolved and then comedically brought back to life when it turns out that Rene has no clue how to take care of himself so he almost sets the manor on fire/eats some kind of terrible cooking inspired by myself and my inability to cook anything normal (one day I’ll write out the story I had where Rene is banned from cooking duty.)
Day 12 (Okay so I clearly skipped over a few days…): Rene goes over his backstory.
Day 13: A day of bad luck for Rene at the manor.
Day 14: You don’t have to go home if you don’t want to. Like me! (Pepper explains why he and Sage were turned into dolls)
Day 15: Beet goes over her backstory (Beet was going to have her rich merchant family with many siblings backstory gone over where the eldest brother tried to have her killed but she ran away before on a boat and her other sibling was killed in the process, ended up in Gridania because of bad luck (dunno if I meant a storm or storm based primal/big monster?) but she ends up pulling Rene’s coffin and her confused stammering makes Rene think “oh, a zombie” so he doesn’t question it. They are both. So stupid.)
Day 16 Interlude: A cat problem (Rene had a magic cat in this one that also turned out to be a familiar that he just thought was a regular cat. It’s very funny when it starts talking.)
Day 17: speaking of inns! (An entire Inn explanation)
Day 18: The crossroads for Limsa and Ul’dah (I think this is supposed to be a reference to the characters from Limsa and Ul’dah meeting)
Day 19: What ever happened to that subplot? (I have no clue what’s this in reference to.)
Day 20: M’ari ends up enlisting ghostly help (Ditto.)
Day 21: The gang preps to move to Limsa lominsa (They were gonna drag Rene to the arcanist’s guild and have him poked at)
Day 22: Rene gets abducted by banditS
Day 23: An entirely different interlude in Ul’dah (I have no clue what this could be referencing.)
Day 24: Oh, ascians. (Black masks, I guess. They were still active in Post ARR a bit.)
Day 25: And a primal on top of everything too? (You can see where I was clearly losing any kind of coherent plot and just throwing darts at the wall in escalation. This definitely would’ve been cut, but I suppose it could’ve also been a hoax.)
Day 26: Notes between parties (Team Gridania, Ul’dah, Limsa) are compared to get on top of the plot
Day 27: Everyone forgot about the cursed haunted doll maker that was a part of the plot so they forcibly inserted themselves back into the plot.
Day 28: Big fight scene
Day 29: Voidsent extraction, but the voidsent had all the aether snuffed up in between the last two fights that it was immensely easy to kill or the funnier route, the cat eating it
Day 30: Epilogue
Rene and Beet somehow end up as twin adders despite everything, proving that they are huge losers no matter the universe

Bon quits his job goes back to being a forest cryptid

Sage and Pepper learn about the value of family or something, their plot never got resolved

Lily moves into the manor and immediately begins committing crimes against nature because she has nothing else going for her character so I wanna see how far I can push the mad scientist angle

No, this isn’t canon to part time lore, just a fun writing exercise I was doing that I didn’t have fun with anymore.
