Patchworks is a series of collected drabbles/one shots/prompts that I'm posting based on pokemon ideas that I've had but not enough to make full fics of. Today's collection is actually a collection of older fic ideas I posted on Pillowfort. CW in the 2nd one for child manipulation and endangerment because of the plot. I don't think they'll be reposted to ao3 hence the 1.5 thing.

Combining the two ideas for space. They couldn't be any more different though. I had this bad habit during my short lived FF14 writing period where I'd get an idea and try to make a whole fic out of it but for pokemon I slapped the ideas onto notes and then refused to work on them again, I can't write a fic for every single idea.

Plot Bunny A: Resonance Theory

Plot bunnies roam free because of me writing one Pokemon fanfic that wasn’t my “guy gets a legendary without knowing it’s one, ends up in a game plot”— but I’m unceremoniously throwing out this plot bunny since it got in the way of me writing the follow up/second perspective of Loser’s Orbit.

I wrote this in a flow of mind after my daydream about it. It’s somewhat choppy….
so what if Pokemon partnership went like… further beyond?

Essentially there’s a Pokemon that a person bonds so closely with that they become their partner and get to have powers of the same type of Pokemon—normally this isn’t a major issue but the region’s been prodded at by researchers and trainers because of mega evolution and put on the radar and people want to be in on this hot new thing that sounds like bond phenomena…Pokemon guardians?

They bond kind of like in reburst minus the uh. You know. They get powers and outfits but don’t look like you know, that. (So are the like… magical people? Whatever. Think more on this.) The region itself is called Resona because i am not creative

This sounded much more elegant in my daydream but I’ll power through it I swear
Okay so:
Main character is daughter of a family who’s basically dedicated to making sure that the resonance ritual goes properly and the person finds the Pokemon they’re bonded to, she’s learning all the proper techniques when she becomes older because everyone assumes she’ll stay with the tradition

There was a big war years ago between humans and Pokemon and there was one Pokemon who was actively malicious and when the big good legendary Pokemon intervened that’s when resonance was created but it’s two ways—human and Pokemon

Normally that’s not a problem because most Pokemon don’t have human intelligence but some do and it’s basically like “cool, free partner in causing shenanigans willing or unwilling”. This is a problem with Pokemon that are more malicious but not if you have like, a rockruff or something.

There’s probably a lot of ethical problems that could arise but the bond has to be two way and could easily snap if neither party really wants it or like. It’s selective? Only some people get a chosen Pokemon, others are totally content with just being regular people or leaving the region. Only those who are resonants have to stay in the region because… reasons. The region itself is like—

no Pokeball capturing, no league, just clans with types because naturally having pokeballs would cause problems with people who are resonant with a certain Pokemon and its like—yoink, no more resonant for you
It’s like soulmates but on a Pokemon scale and it’s like—what do you do if you catch a Pokemon that was a resonant with someone who wasn’t born or is dead or would they die too and then it’s like. That’s hard to get to.

clan time!
The nature clan: Water, Grass, Flying,
The Elemental Clan: Fire, Electric, Ice
The Genius (need a better name for this.) Clan: Psychic, Dragon, Bug
The uh… normal clan: Normal, Fighting, Fairy,
The Industrial Clan: Steel, Rock, Ground
The dark clan: Ghost, Dark, Poison

The clans basically all hate each other and there’s a lot of infighting because of the types like bug and psychic don’t want dragon there and everyone wants to throw bug resonants into the dark clan and dark clan hates the fact everyone assumes they’re evil just because of the typing

Okay back to the main character though,

she’s friends with this other kid who has never been able to make friends with Pokemon or cause a bond resonance but it’s fine, there’s no deadline or anything, maybe he’s a late bloomer, but eventually he’ll get a Pokemon and people will stop isolating him and he’ll be friends with everyone and normal

That doesn’t happen.

The main girl’s extended family has been actively suppressing this kid because his bond is with the evil legendary so naturally they’re like: we do not want to cause another war on this region especially when people from out of the region are selectively here to do research, we want our place to be under the radar

they also hate the fact that they can’t just get the researchers and selected people/champions to leave, their worry is that it might end up like a tourist trap ruining things and commodifying and more people might leave entirely and the ecosystem and resonant thing might get entirely screwed up (think kitakami from the ScaVio DLC)
But anyways

The ritual fails terribly and the evil legendary basically hijacks this poor kid and it’s up to the main girl to get him back
But if the resonance is two ways, and the evil legendary is the one at the front… then what’s happening to her friend…?
That’s all I have on this one though. If I went any further, I might start writing it and I still have other things I need to sort through with my notes to make it actually readable.

Plot Bunny B: Interpol Saga

I have… no clue where this one came from, its so radically different from everything else I’ve ever written down. Thought about Pokémon special and Lack Two and then I thought about Lusamine and then Athena from FF14 and then my brain immediately got plot bunnies again. I put down one and then another spawns in.

Act 1: Or, the warning signs ignored.

To combat the alarming amount of teams that grew within regions, international police sought a way to cause intervention. A suggestion was planted that should’ve died the minute it was mentioned, but since children were so efficient at toppling these teams, interpol should begin training some themselves. It was put down as a joke, and it should’ve stayed as a joke. Still, the idea held some merit.

A mother volunteered herself and her daughter to the program. It only made sense, this was a well known person already within internationals, who came from a line of family with prestige.

“Of course, myself and my child will do perfectly!”

The daughter made no comment on the situation.

There was a second child who was volunteered, and soon, more followed. An academy was established within a small location on an island in order to better facilitate and house these children.

You need to be polite. I need to know everything about your life. How did you do in classes today? Why didn’t you do this the way I told you to? Be the perfect child. I know everything, so listen to me and only me. My child must be perfect.

Lessons were planned in advance, and these children were rotated through multiple professors to ensure they kept up to normal curriculums. The mother became a well known figure to these children, acting as their surrogate. Professors that voiced concern were swiftly replaced by those who could care less of the assets and more of the potential. A single child cried out to severity, but was cut out of the program for “misconduct and obstruction.”

Stay out of sight. Learn to live in darkness. Don’t make too much noise. Do better. Try harder. You should be able to do this. You should know this already. At least I don’t hit you. There are children that are better than you and have less. You know I love all of you, right? That’s why I’m so hard on you. I only want what’s best for you. My children will all be perfect.

Some of the children had attempted running away and quietly quitting. Others had fought back before being sent away. The lone daughter with other children surrounding her learned to stay quiet.

A lone whistleblower alerted higher ups to the mismanagement of the academy’s resources and assets. But the original was sat upon and delegated. That was the only way to ensure that someone would look into it. Otherwise, it was normal child raising behavior. Only four had made it to an appropriate age out of the large sample, and it would be a waste to not see it through entirely.

The program was attempted to be quietly shut down. But the whistleblower wasn’t satisfied with that, and the entire database alongside camera footage were leaked onto the internet. The hungry media jumped like sharks on an attempt to capitalize on what could be the largest scandal since interpol’s creation.

In the wake of this, the teenagers were sent to various regions in trainer programs to ensure that the media circus wouldn’t get to them if they were not in a centralized area. Sadly despite intentions, they were found, and these are their quotes upon interview. The larger sample of children that fell out of the program were harder to identify so the four that were to be promoted straight to the rankings were to be asked. As an investigator myself, these scattered notes barely reflect upon the horror of what was contained in that database.

Act 2: The aforementioned aftermath.

Interpol’s Child Soldiers?! Quotes from those surviving the brutal training in hell!

You really want to ask me what that hell was like? What a load of tarous shit
.— Pluck (1st attempt to interview before he gave the finger.)

The first thing that went was our names. I wanted to ask for mine back but I forgot it already
.

I wish I was a Pokémon, you know? They’ve got it easy. All they have to worry about is battling, eating, and sleeping. Humans have it harder.

But you can do so much more as a human.

So? What’s the point of being human when no one takes you until when you’re an adult? Even if you’re a trainer, they always tell you to leave it to adults.

I think I’d like to get into contests. I’m already a performer for life anyways... I need to find the real me.

—Airy (who still doesn’t recall her name.) She’s become a water trainer in the meantime.

There’s still types of corporal punishment that are regarded to be okay for children. Someone should’ve done something the first time someone said something.

It wasn’t sustainable, y’know? Like…How were they supposed ta keep up if we did come out perfect? They’d just keep getting kids and prodding at em til they came out the way they wanted? Pluck was right. It was a load of tarous shit.

I’m going to travel far, far away, and then after that? I’ll keep going. I’ll climb to the highest mountains, no one will bother me.

Our end purpose was to infiltrate various teams in perfect disguises and cause their collapses. Now we’re as well known as them.

--Jade (I noted his accent shifted throughout the interview.)

It’s absurd all the way down. The higher ups approved, the professors didn’t help, and why? Because it’s a family dispute, you just have to talk it out and try reasoning. Let’s see you try it then, huh! You wouldn’t last a day!
— Pluck (2nd attempt to interview before he sent out a Pokémon to dissuade reporters)

No one was truly sure what he was referring to until speaking with the daughter, who was in the program alongside the other interviewees.

We were mostly doing training simulations rather than working with live Pokémon. Pause. Sometimes after the lessons were over I’d use the computers to keep using them. It was approved of, so I might as well have done something rather than sitting wondering what I did wrong or what I was going to do wrong.
— Ferric (Daughter of the arrested leader.)

You can doll it up as training as much as you like. I know what we went through.

Act 3: What of the Mother…?

(As an aside, I guess the closest thing to “parent raising an evil team of children” would be the masked man from pokespe. As I edit, I realize that I missed that comparison.)

I’ve made that child loyal to me. I raised an army and you couldn’t handle that with your small ego! I raised you! I made you who you are, and you don’t appreciate it one bit!-

Interview excerpt between Pluck(?) and the ringleader.

“I don’t recall asking you to ask my parents to drop me off at your worthless institution. I’m glad you failed.”

Ferric quietly stood in the corner.

What was her next mission? What did she have to do?

Her numel was still rubbing itself onto her hand. She couldn’t think to pet it. Why would she? Mother wouldn’t approve. Pluck was saying things, but either way, weren’t they in the wrong? If they had listened… if they hadn’t done these things… then things would be fine? No one would be happy, but things wouldn’t be this bad either.

“Well, Ferric, what are you doing? Here to get closure, dear? I have nothing to say to a worthless pawn.”

No. She couldn’t think of anything to say to the person behind the bars who haunted her dreams, who wouldn’t let her hold a single pokemon until she reached this age, who wanted nothing more than recognition for her genius. There was no bridge between them.

“…I’m on a journey. A Pokémon one. It’ll be just like the simulations.”

Act 4: Not like the simulations

This is where I decided to stop working on this one. I might bring Ferric and the gang into something more established instead of dart throwing.
